In order for students to confidently acquire new language, they need a lesson that both motivates them (Engage phase) and gives them freedom to practice their languague knowledge freely (Activate) by the end, with acquisition of new language or deeper discussion thereof (Study) somewhere in between. On a personal level, I definitely learned the most from the idea of the Engage phase discussed here; I really enjoy the idea of focusing on getting the students interested and find it comforting that I can allow this phase to be essentially correction-free (working in Japan, most teachers here over-correct).
Methodologies vary, and I'm most familiar with Grammar-Translation, Audio-Lingualism, and PPP since they're essentially what Japanese teachers do (most students I teach are around Beginner or Elementary level). That said, task-based learning and the communicative approach is what I would prefer to employ in my lessons, ideally, though hard to do with such low-level learners here and primary teachers who discourage what those methods require in terms of active communication. Elicitation as a method is something I already attempt to do with everything from gap-fills to follow-up questions, but I'd like to try more of it and learn how to employ it better.
