The forms and usages of the past tenses are similar to those of the present tenses, the main difference of course being whether the action in question occurred in the past or the present. Some patterns that we can notice between the aspects of the past tense and the aspects of the present tense are that the simple tenses don't make use of auxiliary verbs, and the continuous tenses use either the auxiliary verb "to be" in either the present tense (are, am, is) or the pas tense (was, were) with a present participle following it. Whether the present tense or the past tense of the auxiliary verb is used makes the difference between whether a sentence is in the past or present tense in the continuous form, as well as in the perfect form, although in this case the auxiliary verb in question is "to have" (have in the present tense, had in the past tense) and all perfect tenses will include the past participle. The parallel between the present perfect continuous and the past perfect continuous is, once again, the use of the verb 'to have' (with the same distinguishing factor as is found in the perfect aspects) and the use of the additional auxiliary verb "been."
