Receptive skills are reading and listening. These skills are not simply seeing or hearing but the ability to gain meaningful information from these senses. People read or listen for a purpose or for entertainment or sometimes a blend of these two reasons. Teachers must carefully choose the materials for listening or reading from a variety of interesting topics and from both authentic and non-authentic texts. Authentic texts are helpful because they are real-life materials that will help students use their receptive skills and gain confidence in real-life situations, but they may not be appropriate teaching materials for the level of the students, a situation which would cause more frustration and an actual lack of confidence. Non-authentic texts are written for specific levels of English students but may lack that link with the real world. An Engage phase that might involve pictures, discussion of known information, or prediction of the content is very important when teaching receptive skills in order to generate interest and motivate students to actually attend to the text or audio. During the Study phase, it would be helpful to pre-teach vocabulary that might cause comprehension problems before having students read or listen to the selection and then respond by answering comprehension questions. An Activate phase in which partners compose an original text similar to the one they just read about someone or something they know and then share their writing so their classmates can listen and respond could be an effective way to close the class session. Because receptive skills can feel more "passive" in nature, one of the most important issues in planning and conducting a lesson involving receptive skills is generating and keeping student interest and participation throughout the lesson.
