Clarifying terminology for the different kinds of exams and evaluations of student language ability, this unit covered exams used before learning (placement and diagnostic) as well as those that measure progress during and after (progress and formal end-term exams, as well as external tests). External tests in particular were broken down, and due to my work here in Japan, it's informative to see a lot of the other options out there. My learners are young, and also located in rural Japan, so they're most concerned with high school entrance exams and the Eiken; however, most adults I meet here who actually pursue English are often required to take the TOEIC, and the complaints I've heard largely agree with what the course says about its inaccuracy as an evaluation.
That said, showing the sample placement test and discussing the types of exams offered either by Cambridge and other sources is comforting. It's good to know what skills are acceptable to test for (basically all of the core four as well as vocabulary and grammar, though I couldn't tell if function is ever tested in placement or end-term exams), and this gives me some ideas for possible promotions in case some student of mine one day wishes to pursue life outside Japan.
