There are three main areas to address when teaching new language: vocabulary, grammatical structure, and language function. Vocabulary teaches the basic words needed to communicate in a language. Vocabulary lessons should be tailored to the students' level and should teach the meaning, use, grammar, spelling, and pronunciation of the word as well as how it affects other words in a sentence. Vocabulary lessons tend to work well with the "Straight Arrow" ESA method, although other versions of ESA could also be used.
Grammatical structure lessons should teach what the language means, how and when it is used, its correct forms and patterns, and any differences between how it is written and how it is typically spoken. The "Straight Arrow" ESA method works well also for teaching grammatical structure, but for more advanced students, a "Patchwork" or "Boomerang" lesson may be beneficial to give more opportunity for review and student talking time.
Language function lessons give students an introduction and practice in actual use of language in real-life scenarios so that the students can function in settings where they interact with others, so the "Patchwork" or "Boomerang" methods may work best to give multiple opportunities to practice and role-play the correct use for a given situation in which they may find themselves. It is important for the teacher, when planning a lesson, to identify for him/herself which of the three areas is being focused on so the chosen activities are clear and not confusing and build on known language naturally and effectively.
