This unit addressed the topics of conditional statements and reported speech. First, the five types of conditional statements covered in ESL courses - zero, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and mixed - were explained. The statements - ranging from near certainty (zero) to purely hypothetical (3rd), and a mixed statement with a 3rd conditional clause and a 2nd consequence clause - were looked at for grammatical structure, usage, typical student errors, and several teaching ideas. Secondly, the differences between direct, quoted speech and reported speech were considered. Specifically, when going from direct speech to reported speech, the verb tense must be backshifted on step into the past, first person pronouns change to third person, and time expressions are modified as 'today' would change to 'that day'. The great potential for student error and difficulty with this language point because of the numerous changes in verb tense, pronouns and time expressions was highlighted with the need to teach this topic slowly. As with conditional statements, each aspect of the language should be taught separately. The most helpful part of this unit was the number of teaching ideas and examples (video) that were provided.
