In this unit I learned that the attitude, manner, and teaching style that the teacher comes into class with has a profound effect on either the success or failure of the lesson being taught.
A teacher having a positive and engaging attitude certainly encourages students to respond with a high level of participation. Following proper etiquette by first introducing yourself to your class and then learning the names (and how to pronounce them correctly) of your students sets up an atmosphere of mutual respect in which the lesson can be taught.
A teacher with a relaxed and easy-going manner can help students to also feel at ease and to be more receptive to learning. A teacher who speaks slowly and clearly is able to communicate better with the students so that they can better understand the lesson.
I think it can be difficult to determine which type of teaching style can be most effective in helping students learn. It appeared to me that the teacher in the second lesson used a Patchwork lesson with an Engage phase, two Study phases, and finally an Activate phase. I thought this lesson plan proved to be effective through the teacher's use of visual aids during the Engage phase along with group (two or three students) activity in one of the Study phases. Having the class freely interact with one another as well as with the teacher in the final Activate stage helped the students put into practice what they had just learned.
