This unit discusses ways in which the teacher can help the students improve their speaking and writing skills. When it comes to speaking, fluency and accuracy are both important. The student needs to be able to have the confidence to speak and produce language, but also it needs to be accurate enough to be understood. Too much correction can damage the students' confidence. Accuracy may be even more important for writing. But when writing, the student has more time to think and correct the language.
To encourage accuracy, the teacher has to plan more controlled activities and manage the output of language. To encourage fluency, the teacher plans activities that motivate the students to communicate more, and students control output. More games, pair, and groupwork can help students with fluency and output. Games are are an important part of the teaching process and fun can motivate students.
