This unit addressed issues and concerns related to teaching different types or groups of students. Discussion began with the different types of 'beginners': Absolute (true) beginners vs false beginners (the latter having had some previous English training or exposure, but largely forgotten); adult vs young beginners, with the age separation being somewhere between 16 and 18 years old; and beginners whose L1 does not utilize the Roman alphabet, thereby requiring more literacy training in reading and writing. Discussion then moved to teaching individual learners (vs a group), where lessons are more easily targeted to the individual's language needs, but where the many benefits of group interaction are lost. Thirdly, teaching children (vs adults), where lessons are more focused on short, fun activities due to the shorter attention span. Fourthly, teaching groups (or individuals) of business professionals, where establishing their learning priorities based upon how they will need to use English in their business is of critical importance to maintain motivation and interest. Lastly, teaching monolingual vs multilingual students, where teaching the former is usually in their L1 country and the latter is usually in an English speaking country like the USA or UK. This unit was most helpful to me in seeing how different circumstances will likely determine what kind of students I'm best suited to teach, at least initially.
