This unit describes the 4 past tenses. When speaking about the past, use the past simple to describe one completed action: I ran to the store. This shows the action of running as occurring in the past and completed at that time.
When speaking about something in the progress of happening at a past moment in time, use the past continuous: I was running to the store. We don't know when I started running or when I stopped. All we know is that I was in the progress of running at the moment in question.
When speaking about something that occurred before the past moment we are looking back at, we use the past perfect: When I got to the gas station, my tire had deflated.
When speaking about an event that was in progress continuously up until the point in the past we are referring to, that is the past perfect continuous. This is not a commonly used tense, but it is used: By the time the police arrived, the thieves had been robbing the house for an hour.
