While it is best for the learners to give frequent and continuous feedback, a teacher may wish at times to give more formal evaluation, or may be compelled to by the school. In these cases, there are several options available to the teacher - tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. Tutorials are used to individually or collectively go over aims of the lessons, progress of the students, troubles with the language, review of the work done, and the proficiency of students in completing tasks. Evaluation by the students requires a discussion or survey about what the students feel they are getting out of the class and how it could be modified or altered so they could benefit more. Tests, on the other hand, can be rather varied and include placement tests to determine what course level students should be taking, diagnostic tests to give teachers and students alike an idea of the knowledge level of the students, progress tests to determine how the students are doing with the material, external tests which may be necessary for students to get jobs or attend schools both in their native country or in English-speaking nations, and practice tests which will help prepare students for both large grades progress tests as well as external tests they may need to take.
