This unit looked at the two reception skills of reading and listening. It first noted that we read and listen either for a purpose to gain particular information or for entertainment just for fun and personal enjoyment. Five particular skills must be developed: predictive (being able to predict what a text or dialogue is about from the headline or introduction), scanning (being able to obtain specific information of interest without reading/hearing everything), skimming (being able to obtain general information to get the overall idea without reading/hearing everything), detailed information (being able to obtain minute detail by carefully reading/hearing everything), and deduction (being able to discern/understand what is meant by the text or dialogue beyond the literal wording; answers the question, 'So what?'). It then discussed potential problems students may have if the text/dialogue used is too difficult for their level of language understanding or the topics are of little interest to them and not likely something they know anything about. Finally, a patchwork ESA was put forward as an example lesson plan, followed by sample lesson exercises we were tasked with writing lesson plans around. The unit was most helpful by focusing on specific skills the students need to obtain.
