In this unit I learned, among other things, that the teaching of pronunciation is often neglected by teachers but that the majority of students actually are interested in this area and are concerned about it. It turns out that the teaching of pronunciation is often lacking or absent in the classroom due to a lack of teacher confidence and training in this area. Difficulty with certain areas, such as the rise and fall or fall and rise of speech, discourages teachers from including pronunciation in their lessons.
I learned too that the intonation and stress of words are important aspects in regards to accuracy and clarity when it comes to communicating. There are a number of techniques available to teachers to help their students learn about intonation and stress.
Furthermore, I learned about linked speech -- that is the difference between how words sound when they're spoken as opposed to when they are written. Linked speech is a natural way of speaking English. And to help students learn to speak this way there is the phonemic alphabet. The phonemic alphabet helps students to pronounce words correctly, regardless of spelling or similarity in individual or groups of letters in a word. For the phonetic alphabet is simply a set of symbols that indicate the way English speakers put sounds together to form words.
