In any language, there are two basic types of skills - receptive skills, which include reading and listening, and productive skills, which are speaking and writing. While the four are equally important, teachers may sometimes wish to focus on some more than the others. When teaching the receptive skills there are many factors to be considered, including which texts to select and how to help students with problem language without preventing them from expanding their abilities. In general, it is advisable to utilize both authentic and non-authentic texts so the students will be able to build confidence in their comprehension. However, one must be careful not to select texts that are too far above or too far below their comprehension level. A text should be challenging but achievable. Furthermore, while the instinct might be to teach all problem language before such a text is read/listened to, the students may benefit more from only being instructed on the necessary vocabulary/language points as non-essential terms can be taught later, and students who believe they must comprehend the entire text in order to attempt to read it will not challenge themselves as much and will thus not build the same level of confidence. It is also a good idea to devise comprehension tasks that will check their levels of understanding. Moreover, a teacher should try to select texts over time that will be of interest to all the students so as to better engage them.
