Evaluating students is important in order to identify what they already know and understand so that the teacher knows what to teach the students moving forward. Evaluation can be in the form of structured, scored tests or can be information gained more informally through one-on-one interaction with students or having students self-evaluate to recognize what they are getting out of the class. It is helpful to give placement tests to start students at the right level at the beginning of the course. Diagnostic tests are also given at the beginning so the teacher knows what content to teach based on what the students at the specific level don't yet know. Progress tests are given periodically to show that the students understand and are retaining what they should be before moving on. EFL teachers are often called upon to help students prepare for external tests that measure students' ability and proficiency in English for the purpose of academic study, employment, or residency in English speaking countries. In this case, practice versions of these external tests are invaluable in preparing students for these tests. Since the purpose of participating in an English class is to be able to use the language in the desired real-life situation, evaluation is necessary to assure the teacher is effectively teaching and the students are becoming more and more proficient in English toward their desired end.
