This unit teaches prospective English teachers about teaching receptive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening. It is the first two skills of a total of four basic skills that is important when we are learning a language. The unit shares with us the reasons why we read and listen. There re two wide-ranging categories for it, for a purpose and for entertainment. It appears that the reasons for this is simple as it is mostly related to our daily lives such as going to places, getting directions and even engaging in our hobbies.
One of the key takeaways from this unit is that reading and listening does not only use our eyes and ears, it also uses the minds. The context and understanding is essential for us to read and listen as it allows us to grasp the full meaning of something we have read or listened to. The specialist skills that we employ is also shared in this unit. In addition, the problems with listening and reading was also shared while language, topics, creating interest tasks and an outline example was covered in this unit.
