Teachers and Learners, this Unit contains handy information for the people who willing to be a teacher. The unit consists of six parts, such as:
1. What makes a good teacher?
2. The role of the teacher
3. Which role and when?
4. What makes a good learner? Distinctions between different ages learners
5. Language levels and differences between different levels
6. Motivation
Unit 1 is saying about the teacher's personality and his relationship with the students. A good teacher should be kind and patient, should take care for the learning of the students. The most important to be patient, so you will not offend the student and his motivation while correcting his mistakes. A good teacher should be lively and entertaining, and a good teacher can motivate learners, no one wants to attend boring classes without any motivation.
During a typical lesson, a teacher will have some, or all, of the following functions: Manager, Organizer, Assessor, Tutor, Observer or Monitor, etc. The teacher becomes a primary resource of information; he coordinates class activities; the teacher is fair and consistent with all the students as well as being very sensitive to the students' reactions and providing necessary support if it needs, the teacher also can give a more personal form of support to the learners.
Learners, their age, cultural background, language level and motivation for learning. There are some general characteristics that students appear to possess, as a willingness to listen to the language, a desire to experiment with the language, don't be afraid to practice it with the native speakers, trial and error play an essential part of any learning curve. It is necessary and useful to ask any questions to make everything clear, an acceptance of error correction will help to move forward and be ready for that everybody can make a mistake. And the most important is a desire, a learner's passion for learning something new.
Learners are different. There are adults (>18y.o.) and young learners (1-18y.o.). For example, adults have a higher attention span, and they have more life experience, but at the same time they can be nervous during classes, and they can match new language to their native language. Young learners have an open-minded approach to new learning experiences and methods. They may be somewhat lacking in motivation. Young learners won't be language awarned, but there could be behavior problems.
There are six English language levels. Beginners, zero knowledge to a very basic understanding of English; Elementary, basic knowledge of subject or verb and basic vocabulary; Pre-intermediate, able to discuss a range of topics, still can make basic errors; Intermediate, ready to discuss a large variety of issues, lack of accuracy and fluency; Upper Intermediate, fairly fluent, still some problems with accuracy; Advanced, can sometimes feel that they reached a plateau, advanced learners require encouragement.
One of the most crucial parts of the language learning is motivation. The teacher should help learners to understand that learning English makes working life more comfortable, improves career prospects, makes it easier to communicate while abroad, will help to interact with people from different countries and make new friends. English is the closest the world comes to having a global language. At least, learning English makes life easier!
