This unit broke down the multiple parts of a sentence and explained the purpose of each type of word. It discussed commonly known grammar points such as the noun and verb, to more detailed grammar such as transitive and intransitive verbs. Grammar is a very difficult thing to grasp in any language and even when one understands the basic sentence structure, there are always irregular verbs and words that break all the rules. I learned many of these points naturally throughout life, but really seeing the different parts of a sentence, and how it all works together, really helped my understanding. Some of the more common grammar points such as nouns, verbs and objects are easy enough to understand. However, each of those have their own subcategory that complicates things. Nouns, or the subject of the sentence, can be replaced by 'gerunds' that are actually verbs in the -ing form. As seen in the sentence 'Playing golf is fun' It's this kind of structure that makes English so interesting as well as difficult. The unit also discusses adverbs and adjectives and explains how they are used to enhance and add meaning to nouns and verbs. It also describes in detail the basic rule or order when arranging adjectives. When adjectives are arranged as 'size-age-color-material-noun' it will sound smoother to a native English speaker than if those same adjectives are arranged in different orders. Each word has a purpose in every sentence and this unit helped me understand how to use every word effectively.
