Modal verbs have different uses depending on the situation, and they are not all entirely interchangeable. This can pose a problem for English learners who may not be able to fully understand the differences in functions between certain words. The passive voice is used a lot in daily language and must therefore be learned in order to ensure fluent communication and complete understanding of English. In order to learn the passive voice effectively, students must understand the grammatical differences between active and passive voice sentences, and the change in meaning which is caused by this. Phrasal verbs are difficult to learn through pure explanation and would be best taught through practice exercises and drilling, rather than lengthy explanations or a long list of examples.
