This unit covered the components of the process involved in teaching a new language to someone. The components include vocabulary, grammar and functions. Literally, these constitute the substance of what is to be taught and their forms, which is shaped by how one wants the language to function, meaning what the communication needs to accomplish. This unit is useful in that it discusses the nuances of how the substance of what is being taught is influenced by where the students are in their development, how the students will be using what they learn, which in turn shapes things like vocabulary selection and lesson planning as the teacher decides what activities and contexts the students will engage in.
