Unit 3 is an overview about teaching techniques and methodologies As an English teacher,everybody has his/her own technique or choice for teaching.Techniques also varies by the learners catching abilities or level of language.Few of the popular methodologies are known as grammar-translation,audio-lingualism,presentation-practice-production,task based learning,silent way,suggestopaedia etc.The most effective way,according to Jeremy Harmer is Engage-Study-Activate, minimized as ESA.In the "Engage" stage,teachers try to involve or engaged with the students on a single topic,like animal,music,sports,picture,personality etc,but no lesson should be taught in this stage as it is an introductory or warming stage between teachers and students.Teaching being started in the "Study" stage by elicitation and drilling them on that particular topic ,considering spelling error,correction,understanding the meaning of words,analizing etc.The final stage "Activate" is most likely the independent stage where students can freely discuss on that topic without language barriers by grouping themselves,role-playing,debating,even by story building.It is noted that a teacher can use the elements,Engage,Study and Activate as maximum time they need during their lesson but in terms of order,where the ESA method starts with an "Engage" and finishes with an "Activate".So,ESA is the most affective and fruitful methodology for the beginning of a TEFL class.
