The unit focused on knowledge that teachers should have to effectively teach pronunciation and phonology, and provided a number of techniques for teaching pronunciation, as well as guidelines for when to teach pronunciation. It also emphasized at the beginning of the unit that this is perhaps the most neglected aspect of TEFL teaching, though effective teachers will consider pronunciation to be an essential part of the course. As a teacher, one should have an understanding of stress, rhythm, intonation and the phonetic alphabet, as well as be able to both explain and demonstrate nuances of pronunciation technique to students. I think that this is an area that a lot of native speakers understand intrinsically, but do not understand in the highly analyzed way of linguists, and many people are certainly turned off by this kind of approach. Still, it is hard to argue against having knowledge, and pronunciation/phonology is one area of knowledge that TEFL teachers should be familiar with, lest we do our students a disservice.
