Unit 11 covers the area of language instruction referred to as 'receptive skills'; listening and reading. The unit begins by separating the motives for reading and listening into two fairly broad categories: for a purpose and for entertainment. Then the unit breaks down the range of skills necessary to read and listen effectively: being predictive, scanning, skimming, for detailed information, and deducting. The unit notes the problems teachers face when teaching listening and reading and what can be done to diminish problems in the classroom, such as, pre-teaching vocabulary and carefully selecting texts. To help keep all students interested a range of topics that are interesting to the students should be selected. By creating interest the teacher can enhance student motivation to perform the tasks. The unit provides an outline of a typical receptive skills lesson plan in patchwork form which helps TEFL students to become more familiar with this type of lesson plan related to teaching receptive skills. The unit ends by nicely summarizing the basic keys to having a successful lesson, followed by excellent handouts and of course by the necessary task sheet.
