This unit is a brief and concise introduction of the basic grammatical points in the English language. Divided into eight sections, each section is focused on different parts of speech: Nouns, Adjectives, Articles, Verbs, Adverbs, Gerunds, Pronouns, Prepositions/ Conjunctions.
Having carefully studied each section of the unit, I realized that even though I am a native speaker, the process of dissecting each part of speech is just as foreign to me as trying to learn a new language. Prepositions and their uses for example, took some time for me to absorb on an intellectual level even though I have no trouble using them in speech.
I arrived at the conclusion that speaking a language has little to do with grammatical knowledge, and more to do with “muscle memory”. But to non-native speakers, grammar is the lifeline that they cling to with determination. Each sentence is scrutinized with caution before it is verbalized, but that is not the natural process of speech. Therefore, it is I feel, more efficient to study less unified portions of grammar using a bigger frame of reference such as novels or stories that envelope these grammatical points, shifting the focus towards repetition, so that the knowledge is processed in a more natural manner.
