I found this unit very helpful in aiding my students to understand why and when we use the past tenses in the English language. Knowing the form and structure is important but explaining its usages is genuinely important. The simple past tense is used for an action completed in the past. It clearly took place in the past at a definite time in the past. As for an action that was in progress at a certain time in the past would be a past continuous tense. These actions can be interrupted at the time it happened; ie. My father was mowing the lawn when I arrived. A past action that was completed before it, we would use the past perfect to determine if the two past activites are related to each other. For example, he hadn’t bought milk before he came home. The last tense which I find that anglophones tend not to use is the past perfect continuous. It is not a tense we find a use in everyday talk. However, it is important to know that this tense is used for continuing actions in the past up until an action in the past. So for example, when a person would like to talk about a longer action or situations in the past that had been going on up to the past moment. Here is an example: Before going to bed, he had been watching T.V. for hours on end. I am better equipped to teach the past tenses, thanks to this unit. I feel I have the ability to explain to a low-level student which usages and why for each tense.
