Language skills can be divided into the four basic categories of reading, listening, writing and speaking, all of which are equally important. The first two are considered passive language skills, because the student is not so much producing language of their own as they are trying to receive and comprehend language produced by someone else. In creating a lesson plan where the focus is on passive skills such as reading and listening, it is often helpful to first cover any difficult vocabulary or words or new language patterns that the students will encounter in the text, video or recording. It is also often helpful to review or drill difficult vocabulary or grammar structures after the reading or listening exercise so that students are able to retain what they have absorbed, with a greater chance of them using such language correctly in the future. In choosing readings a teacher should distinguish between authentic materials, created for other speakers of the language, and non-authentic materials, materials created for the purpose of language learning. The teacher should also try to balance topics to include a range of useful scenarios or to appeal to a range of students with varied interests.
