The two video demonstration lessons were quite different. In the first video, the teacher comes off as confusing, inexperienced or perhaps ill-prepared, slightly intimidating and not very engaging. He also seems to have difficulty knowing what to do if something doesn’t go right immediately, if the students don’t understand a word or instructions, or if he does not receive the kind of feedback he is expecting. In the second lesson by contrast, the teacher engages students more directly, with a lot more individual attention and a kind of gentle, friendly encouragement to elicit language or get the kind of response he is looking for. In the second lesson he is much more effective at getting the students to understand the purpose and function of the activities. Not only is he more clear in his language and instructions, but the pacing is very different and he seems quite concerned with leading the students step-by-step through each activity, so that they get something out of it, whereas in the first lesson he moved at his own pace regardless of student response, and he seemed most interested in concluding the lesson and getting out the door. The different response from the students to the two different approaches was obvious. Students in the second lesson are much more engaged, seem more interested, have more opportunity for individual study and practice, and clearly they received more benefit from this style of class. It looked more fun too, whereas the first lesson was kind of uncomfortable to watch.
