Unit 12 focuses on the teaching of the productive skills: speaking and writing (including games). The unit makes note of the fact that the two skills are not taught equally in TEFL; speaking issues can be cleared up immediately, whereas writing is largely relegated to homework and not truly developed. The unit goes on discuss the differences between accuracy and fluency activities and how to implement them in a classroom where a lesson moves from controlled activities to guided activities to more creative communication activities. Not all students are extroverts, thus, teachers must know how to encourage students to speak. The unit outlines reasons why students are reluctant to speak, then lists some techniques to encourage interaction before providing a straight arrow ESA lesson plan focussed on getting students to speak about the weather. The unit then provides concise guidelines for how to have more free and creative speaking activities before giving necessary feedback. The Writing section covers the importance of handwriting, spelling, punctuation, as well as creative writing. A typical ESA creative writing activity lesson is laid out to be a helpful reminder. The unit concludes by covering the topic of games in the classroom as to why they are important and how to include them. As always the unit concludes by having students fill out a task sheet to show what they have studied in the unit.
