This unit provides a wealth of information. Major methodologies for teaching languages are covered, prior to the introduction of E(ngage), S(tudy), A(ctivate), which was put forward by Jeremy Harmer. ESA is the foundation of this course. A key factor, "elicitation", is covered in depth, and a number of examples are given. These include the use of real objects, flashcards, drawings, etc. An overview of ESA presents Engage as the "warm up" phase, where aspects such as games and stories are important. This phase is not so directly about learning. Study starts with elicitation and uses exercises to understand the construction of language. During the Activate phase, students freely use language with a focus on fluency rather than accuracy. Role play is important during the Activate phase. Subsequently, the three phases of ESA are all covered in detail. "Straight Arrow", "Boomerang" and "Patchwork" approaches are covered. Finally, a wealth of ideas and practical methods are presented. I found this unit particularly useful.
