This unit covers modals, phrasal verbs and the passive voice. The nine true modal auxiliary verbs are captured in the video. Additional auxiliaries are captured in the written unit matrial. Modal auxiliaries are used for forms of speech addressing ability, advice, obligation, possibility and probability, permission and prohibition. Examples of auxiliary verbs include: can, could, may, might, shall, should, etc.. The passive voice is one of two voices in English. The other is the active voice. The form of the passive voice is based on the verb "to be" plus the past participle. The passive voice is used when the "agent" in the sentence is less imoprtnat, is not known, or is being concealed. The passive voice cannot be used with intransitive verbs. The final element of this unit is concerned with phrasal verbs, or "multi-word verbs". There are three types: intransitive, transitive and transitive inseparable.
