This section focused on teaching to five special groups, Beginners, Individuals (one on one), Young Learners, Business English, and Monolingual vs. Multilingual. The way in which you teach English to young learners is a lot like the way they learn their own native language. As an infant and toddler they are learning from their parent and their parent is speaking to them with a slower and more pronounced deliver. With young children we use lots of songs and repetition, and we rarely correct and never criticize. Instead we keep it fun and are quick to praise. All of these are methods in which we use in the classroom with young English learners. It is also important with them to keep the activities dynamic and change them frequently so that we retain their attention. Another area I found interesting was business learning. While this can sound daunting because of the word "business," they already know the business, we are merely teaching them the English to support their work. Having worked in a corporate world for 15+ years I can see how going into this field requires a business like strategic process. First level test the group, followed by a needs analysis, perform a group needs negotiation to ensure you will be able to teach enough of what they are looking for in the time allotted. Plan the syllabus, at a mid point test and evaluate their progress, and finally conduct a post course evaluation to check that their needs were met. I never realized there were so many opportunities to teach English.
