The unit discussed the two fundamental classroom roles, those of teachers and of learners, and not only covered general qualities of each, but also went into specific sub-roles that an effective teacher should be able to employ and into specific categories of learners, as well as covered issues that can affect the learning-teaching process. Teachers will have to be at times managers, models or controllers, and at other times prompters, participants or simply observers. Learners can be categorized by age, language level, purpose or motivation for study and the requirements and challenges for dealing with each type are various. Culture and previous language can greatly affect how learners learn and what kind of roles and methods a teacher will have to make use of in order to be effective. It is not only important to 'teach' students, but to develop a rapport, provide encouragement, keep learners interested and motivated, and it is important to continually learn and adapt to the 'learners' who, shall we remember, are bright human beings who know things we don't know too. As an additional item, I also learned, well, I had no idea that there was a Common European Framework for assessing English language ability. The Europeans are getting so much better at cooperating their way to standardization. And this system gives three names to each level: the marketing name --Vantage; the descriptive name --Independent User; the index name --B2. Fancy. Thorough, and fancy.
