Unit 7 outlined general guidelines and teaching framework suggestions for teaching vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. Teaching vocabulary involves selecting the appropriate items, and then teaching what needs to be known about those items: meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling, and pronunciation. A typical vocabulary lesson will be taught in a 'straight-arrow' ESA format. When teaching grammar, one needs to know meaning, use, forms/patterns, spoken and written form. Like vocabulary lessons, grammar is typically taught within a 'straight-arrow' ESA lesson plan. Teaching language functions includes topics such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, and suggesting. It also includes the appropriacy of the language in terms of register (formal, informal, etc.). A standard lesson plan in this area will usually follow a 'patchwork' or 'boomerang' ESA framework.
