This unit deals with the teaching of Receptive Skills. There are four basic language skills. Two are receptive: reading and listening; two are producive: speaking and writing. The productive skills are covered in the video for this unit. For receptive skills, it is first important to establish whether the reason is for a purpose (such as reading a user manual to understand how to use an appliance), or whether it is purely for entertainment (such as reading a novel). Then it is important to acknowledge other skills we use, such as being predictive, scanning or skimming, looking for detailed information or deducing meaning from context. Considerations to bear in mind when teaching are pre-teaching (of vocabulary) and text selection. An outline of a patchwork ESA lesson is provided. This unit has particularly provided me with useful ideas for teaching in class through the use of subjects such as famous people, and games that may be introduced to stimulate interest and motivation.
