Present Simple Tense is used to denote a past action when the time is given or asked about. It is also used to express the action that took place at a definite time even though this time is not mentioned. Past Continuous Tense is used to describe an action which began before at time and probably continues after it. Past Perfect is used to describe completely finished actions. Past Perfect Continuous isn't used often, it denotes longer actions or situations in the past.
