This unit covers teaching the vocabulary, grammar and functions of English. Each topic is covered in turn. The ESA approach is integrated into the unit and, as such, serves to reinforce the use of this method. Useful ideas, such as the use or realia, are presented.. There is also an interesting reference to the Cobuild English Dictionary, although this is not essential to understanding the unit content. It is nevertheless important to note that "About 90% of spoken and written English is made up of approximately 3,500 words." I found some of the questions in the unit test to be somewhat of a common-sense nature, rather than being drawn directly from the unit content. Examples would include: question 8: "How long the word has been in common usage." and question 10: " How often the structures are used."
