This unit elucidated the advantages and disadvantages of using course books and the teacher's own materials. While course books are good for inexperienced teachers and provide a tried and tested method, they are inflexible and (without modification) and not adapted to the needs of an individual class. While created materials can be adapted to fit the needs of students, it can be time consuming for the teacher and may be better used to supplement or add to the existing course materials.
