In Unit 15,we come across the methods and techniques for evaluating students levels of progress in their studies and different tests takes both inside and outside of EFL lesson.Students language level can be evaluated by a number of ways-tutorial,evaluation by the students and tests.Tutorial is to examining the students either by grouping them or a to a single student by teacher himself/herself,while evaluation by the students is to evaluate themselves by surveying,debating,role-playing,group discussion without the absence or introduction of the teachers.But among all of them,the most effective way to judge student's level of language are to arrange different tests at various states of their lesson.Suppose,Placement tests comes prior to commencing EFL classes to know their level of language and assist the formation of groups,while Diagnostic tests can be arranged at the beginning of studies to see what the students already know and help teachers prepare their lesson and materials.Progress tests can be given periodically throughout the course for varying their progresses at various steps of lesson,and thus progress tests including a balance of skills(both receptive and productive),along with grammar and vocabularies.Then comes achievement test or internal test,given at the end of course.Few external examinations are applicable outside of EFL course-TOEFL(test of English as a foreign language),IELTS ( International English language testing system)TOEIC (test of English for international communication) and Cambridge Assessment tests,including General English and business English certificate.General English is based on KET(key English test),PET (preliminary English test),CAE(certificate in advanced English)etc while business English tests include BEC(business English certificate) and BULATS (business language testing series). There are many other external examinations,some of them focusing on integrated skills and some on just one skill.Edexcel London tests of English focuses on integrated skills while Trinity exams in spoken English focuses on speaking abilities only
