Unit 13 covers teaching pronunciation and phonology which is the study, science, analysis, and classification of the physical properties of sounds. Intonation is explained as the variation in volume and pitch in whole sentences, whereas stress is concerned with individual sounds. Several examples of both are given. The unit goes on to discuss techniques for indicating and teaching intonation, which include: nonsense words, gestures, humming, or simply by using the whiteboard. Stress is covered and many examples given to show how stress on a different sound can change the meaning of a sentence. General stress rules are laid out in a convenient chart. Oftentimes in English, sounds are joined together, and many examples of this are given. Linked speech is also quite common in English and many examples of this are given as well. Phonemic symbols are laid out clearly in a handy chart and complicated articulations of sounds is nicely explained. Finally, useful teaching techniques for the pronunciation of individual sounds are included in the unit. When to teach pronunciation is discussed and a sample of phonemic script is given just before the task sheet.
