The unit focused on productive language skills, which includes writing, speaking and also games, i.e. skills and activities where students have to produce language for themselves. With speaking and writing the emphasis is a bit different. For instance, with speaking, fluency and pronunciation are quite important, whereas with writing, spelling, punctuation and structure are more important. Oral communication is all about here and now, whereas with writing, you may be communicating with someone removed in time and space from you, with no possibility for clarification if the meaning is uncertain. This unit also focused on the difference between accuracy and fluency, which is an important distinction for the teacher to understand, as what kind of activities are planned or what kind of corrections or feedback is given will depend in part on whether the purpose of the activity or lesson is more about accuracy or more about fluency. Both are important. The unit also mentioned that writing is probably the most neglected aspect of the TEFL world, which I think is unfortunate for a couple reasons. First, in teaching writing, students will still have an opportunity to work on their other skills of listening, speaking and reading. Second, the process of writing is not only one that stimulates the mind, but over time helps build a thought process that one does not have if one is not a writer.
