This unit extensively explains the factors that need to be considered when teaching pronunciation such as stress, intonation, articulation and rhythm. It may be hard for a non-native speaker of English to identify the differences when listening to stress and intonation for the first time. There are several rules for when stress occurs such as nouns, adjectives, verbs and compound words. Stress rules state that only syllables can have stress. Also, it is usually one stress per one word. The normal pattern for intonation is rise/fall. Intonation is important during conversations as a speaker will attempt to convey a message such as questioning, agreeing, disagreeing or confirmation. Emotions are also conveyed through intonation. When teaching pronunciation of single sounds, teachers can include peer dictaion, mouth modeling of sounds, visuals, tongue twisters and phonetic symbols. The importance of phonology is to understand that sounds are made in various ways - articulation: place and mannner. If a student knows where and how each sound is created, it can help them with the production of speech sounds.
