This unit covers methods for teaching new vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. Acquiring new vocabulary occurs at every level of English language learning. It is common that students will know more words than they actually use. Certain vocabulary might be easier or more difficult based on the students you are teaching. This depends on a few factors such as similarity to the students' native language or even how close it is to other words they already know. The age and level of the student may also contribute to this. For example, a younger student may have trouble with advanced vocabulary even if their spoken English is a higher level. Selecting which vocabulary to teach will usually come from a set curriculum or books. Students will be more easily engaged and encouraged to learn vocabulary that they are likely to use. It is important to select words that they will understand and frequently use, in order to increase retention. An example engage activity for younger students would be showing pictures while telling a story or using real life objects they can recognize. When planning vocabulary lessons, it will be important to be as creative as possible to improve vocabulary retention. We also learned introducing new grammatical structures. Students will need to know what the language means to fully understand how and when its used. We will need to teach earning patterns and formations, as well as the differences that may arise between spoken and written English.
