Unit 15 discusses the use of evaluation and testing in the classroom. There are many ways to assess students' language levels including tutorials, evaluation by students, and tests.
The most familiar assessment is probably tests. There are various types of tests given to students at different times for different purposes.
Placement tests are often given to students at the beginning of a course in order to group students of similar language levels, and they allow teachers to evaluate the language level of a student.
Progress tests are given periodically throughout a course to determine what students have remembered and what they may have forgotten. Diagnostic tests are also given at the beginning of a course and help the teacher identify points that students might need help with. Based on diagnostics tests, teachers can better prepare lessons and materials.
There are also practice tests that follow the same format and structure as external exams in order to help students prepare for those external exams. External exams are given by outside institutions in order measure different levels of proficiency for different purposes. Some of the most common external exams include the TOEFL, TOEIC, and IELTS. There are also external exams offered by Cambridge Assessment and Trinity College of London.
Testing is helpful in allowing teachers to identify what students know and don't know, and they also encourage students to review.
