Unit 12 was very similar in format to unit 11, except that it dealt with the teaching of productive skills, that is speaking and writing. Speaking activities can be broken down into three different sub categories. Controlled activities are the most structured and include drilling and prompting. Guided activities offer a little more flexibality and include things such as model dialogues and guided role-play. Creative communications are activities that focus on fluency and offer the most freedom. Included are actities such as free role-play, debates and simulations. The unit also included a section on encouraging students to speak. Making sure that all students have adequte speaking time is a very important responsibility of the instructor.
Writing skills was also discussed in this unit. Often time writing skills are given a lower priority in a typical TEFL class, as it can be viewed as too much "quiet time" in a class session. Depending on the goals of the students however, writing skills can be very important. Personally, while I would definitely allocate some in class time to writing skills, I think writing skills are better suited to being assigned as homework.
The unit concluded with a section on games that can be used in the classroom. Many games that do not have a language focus at first glance can be modified to incorporate/reinforce language learning.
