Unit 12 focuses on the productive skills of speaking and writing. While there are several different reasons why people communicate, it is the teacher's duty to make sure that communication opportunities are optimized so that students desire to speak and write. For both speaking and writing, accuracy has to do with the study stage and fluency has to do with the activate stage. That said, there are a number of options for kinds of activities. An example of a spoken, controlled-thus focused in accuracy- is a 3 x 3 drill. Free role-play is an example of a fluency activity because it allows for students to experiment with the language when speaking. Interaction among students is encouraged although the teacher should start the lesson with a controlled situation so that students know what type of language they are going to use. Writing skills have their own set of rules that do not pose such a problem in spoken language. Concerning written skills, students must pay attention to spelling, punctuation, penmanship, and layout. Finally, this unit covers several different types of games that a teacher can use to promote spoken and written skills while having fun. Twenty questions, tic-tac-toe, and crosswords are a few of the examples that are given.
