The unit discusses the importance of receptive skills (reading and listening) in contrast to productive skills (speaking and writing). It briefly mentions that both receptive and productive language skills are of equal importance and that it all should be integrated as much as possible. There are 2 main reason why people read and listen; for a purpose and for entertainment. There are 5 ways to read and listen; predictive, scanning, skimming, detailed and deduction. In order for lessons to have a positive outcome, the students' interest should be taken into consideration when selecting the topic/s. The lessons need to motivate the students to want to learn in order for them to take in any information that is being taught. Ensure that receptive tasks are able to target comprehension skills as well as monitor their understanding of the language being taught. Wherever necessary, pre-teach any difficult vocabulary prior to tasks being carried out as this will aid the students.
