The past tenses are very similar to the structure of the present tenses. Like the present tenses, there are four past tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. The past simple tense's basic form uses one word like the present simple tense. Regular verbs add a "d" or "ed" to the base form of the verb, for example "float" becomes "floated" and "paint" becomes "painted." Many common verbs have irregular simple past forms, for example "ride" becomes "rode" and "drink" becomes "drank." The past continuous adds the past tense of the auxiliary verb "be," which is "was/were," and the base form of the verb plus "ing." For example, "They were floating down the river," or "She was riding her bike." The past perfect relates events that happened in the past to events that happened even before that. The past perfect is formed by using the past tense of the auxiliary verb "have," which is "had," and the past participle (for regular verbs, the verb plus "ed"). For example, "I had arrived already," and "We hadn't read the book." The past present continuous is not frequently used in English, but is used to talk about things that happened in the past that had been going on continuously up to the moment that we are know talking about. It is formed by using the auxiliary verbs "had" and "been" plus the base verb with "-ing." For example, "We had been eating dinner when the phone rang."
