This unit has taught me many things about the appropriate usage of course books and instructional materials (authentic and created materials). In this topic, common advantages and disadvantages of course books and materials were introduced for the benefit of the teachers like me to know and consider these things. Honestly, based on my experience as a beginner teacher, it is quite difficult to select the appropriate lesson or activity without course books. But sometimes I also get confused whether to use them or make my own activities more interesting for the students. During my attendance in the previous school I taught, I have collaborated with many teachers who have different styles of teaching. Some of them were very strict in following the course book units, but others did not use it at all. From that experience, I realized that as a future English teacher, it is really essential to consider the course book in every level, However, through this topic, I learned that it is more convenient to adopt and adapt or even omit some activities if we work with the course book in order to model them based on the needs of the student. As a conclusion, I would say that course books are good resources to rely on especially for the beginner teacher like me. But do not depend one hundred percent from them. It is also helpful for you and for your students to explore a little bit and use your artistic side.
