This unit covers the teaching of phonology and pronunciation. Phonology is the study, science, analysis, and classification of the physical properties of sounds.
It has covered intonation. This is generally considered to be the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence. It carries the message in a sentence.
There is formal pattern intonation, flat/level intonation. Intonation patterns can be powerful production of the nature of the forthcoming information.
The techniques of teaching intonation are; use of nonsense words, gestures, using the board and singing or humming.
stress.
This is more concerned with individual words.
There are two simple rules about stress; one word has one stress, and we can only stress syllables. You can stress the first syllable, last syllable, penultimate syllable, and the ante-penultimate syllable.
The techniques for teaching stress are; contrastive stress, gestures etc.
Under sound joining, there is linking, sound dropping, sound changing and extra lettering.
We have further seen the phonemic alphabet.
this is a set of symbols that represent the way we put sound together to form words.
The phonemic symbols are- voiced and unvoiced consonants, vowels and diphthongs.
Under articulation, the following are the speech organs that are involved. tongue, larynx, glottis, alveolar ridge, hard palate and soft palate.
The following are places of articulation. palatal, palatal-alveolar, alveolar, dental, labio-dental, bilabial and glottal.
The manner of articulation covers; nasal, fricatives, plosives, lateral, affricate and approximant.
The techniques for teaching pronunciation are; peer dictation, visuals etc.
A teacher can choose when to teach pronunciation. It can be a whole lesson, lesson slots or as when it is required.
I have learnt that in the classroom there should be time given to pronunciation, stress and intonation practice so as to make students aware of the importance of accuracy and clarity of communication.
I have learnt that only the vital syllables in the words conveying essential information are stressed.
