This unit defined the roles of both teacher and learner. Teachers can fulfill one or more of some of the following roles: manager/controller, organizer, assessor, participant, etc. When and how teachers fulfill these roles depends on the situation.
Learners can be divided into several age groups: adult, post-puberty, pre-puberty, and very young learners. Adult learners tend to be more fixed in their views of teaching, have an extensive learning history, clear motivations, and more hesitation to make mistakes. Post-puberty learners tend to be just as self-conscious about making mistakes. Pre-puberty learners are receptive to both pronunciation and grammar rules. Very young learners tend to learn through fun activities like games, drawing, painting, etc. They also are more likely to learn from context instead of matching to their own language word for word.
Learners are divided into several skill levels ranging from Beginner to Advanced. Teachers may find that they enjoy teaching one skill level more than all the others.
This unit make me recognize the roles I lean towards in my own teaching style, and how I can effectively apply other teaching roles to my English lessons.
